National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI)

The aim of the national research data infrastructure (NFDI) is to systematically manage scientific and research data, provide long-term data storage, backup and accessibility, and network the data both nationally and internationally. The NFDI will bring multiple stakeholders together in a coordinated network of consortia tasked with providing science-driven data services to research communities.

German Research Foundation

In November 2018, the GWK decided to establish and fund a National Research Data Infrastructure in order to successfully counter the ongoing digitization and the associated expansion of data generated by science.

The first consortia were selected in June 2020 and further consortia are to be included in the funding in two further funding rounds in 2021 and 2022. A total of up to 30 consortia from different disciplines are to be funded. The aim is to successfully secure, organize, process and scientifically reuse scientific data.

Nine consortia have been funded in the first round since October 2020. The University of Cologne is involved in the following three funded consortia

  • GHGA - German Human Genome Phenome Archive
  • NFDI4Culture - Consortium for research data on tangible and intangible cultural assets
  • NFDI4Health - National research data infrastructure for personal health data

Of the ten consortia confirmed in the second round, seven are based in Cologne:

  • BERD@NFDI - Business, Economic and Related Data
  • DAPHNE4NFDI - Data from Photon and Neutron Instruments for NFDI
  • FAIRmat - FAIR data infrastructure for condensed-matter physics and the chemical physics of solids
  • NFDI4DS - NFDI for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
  • NFDI4Earth - Consortium for Earth System Research
  • PUNCH4NFDI - Particles, Universe, NuClei and Hadrons for the NFDI
  • Text+ - Consortium for research data on language and text data

In the third round, three consortia have Cologne participation:

  • NFDI4BIOIMAGE - National Research Data Infrastructure for Microscopy and Image Analysis
  • NFDI4Memory - Consortium for historical humanities
  • NFDI4Objects - Research data infrastructure for the material legacies of human history

An overview of all consortia funded by the NFDI can be found here.

The consortium Base4NFDI consortium will develop basic services for the NFDI (consortia). Members of consortia can submit applications to support the development of overarching services such as Identity and Access Management Service (IAM), Persistent Identifier Service (PID) or Terminology Services (TS).

The University of Cologne is a member of NFDI e. V. It is represented there by Dr. Jens Dierkes (USB Cologne).
